How to Dress Well: Women’s Guide to Timeless Fashion

This post: How to Dress Well: Women’s edition.

I have always had high end taste + a lower end budget. As a young wife + mom, I couldn’t afford to buy new clothes very often – and certainly not expensive clothes. I had to learn to how to create my dream wardrobe without spending a lot of money.

As a young wife + mom, I couldn’t afford to buy new clothes very often – and certainly not expensive clothes. I had to learn to how to create my dream wardrobe without spending a lot of money. But first, I needed to make another kind of investment. And this kind of investing you can do without spending a dime.

Because really, a big budget doesn’t necessarily produce a wardrobe of clothing you like to wear, or even look good in. You’ve got to figure out the answer to a few questions. And that’s what this article is about – how to dress well: women’s guide to timeless fashion.

For style & beauty tips, see my Get Dressed archives.

What’s my clothing style?

This is the first question to ask yourself, so go ahead. Have you ever thought about your fashion personality?

Every woman has her own style personality, but not every woman really learns how to own it. A fun way to discover your personal style is to create a Pinterest board, or browse magazines, and pay attention to what catches your eye

  • Do you gravitate toward classic blacks-and-whites?
  • Are you a neutrals kind of girl?
  • Or do bold florals or patterns catch your eye?
  • Do you love floppy handbags, or structured totes?
  • Flats or stilettos?
  • Hats or boots?
  • Ponytails or beach waves?

Pay attention to what you like.

Any time you see a style you love, Pin it. Pay attention to the colors, styles, patterns and “looks” that catch your eye. This will help you begin to define your style.

Don’t worry about a budget at this point: invest in discovering who you are first.

Take an honest look at your current wardrobe. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I love my clothes?  Why or why not?
  • Does my wardrobe really reflect who I am?  What does it say about me?
  • Do I have too much stuff piled into drawers + closets? What am I ready to get rid of?
  • Is my wardrobe under-stocked or a bit bare?

Eventually, it will be time to invest in a few essentials that you love. But don’t jump ahead and do that yet!

We’ve got more investing/discovering to do.

Body Types

Did you know? There are 12 different body types? That blew me away!

Find a copy of The Body Shape Bible, by Susannah Constantine and Trinny Woodall. (This book is typically available on Amazon, or check your library or local bookstore.)

Susannah and Trinny taught me how to dress for my body type and it totally changed the way I shopped for clothes!

Beauty Types

Discovering a free quiz by Dressing Your Truth (DYT) was a game-changer for me! DYT by Carol Tuttle is a deeper look at beauty types than the seasonal color palettes most of us are familiar with.

DTY explores types of beauty based on energy profiling + the results are spot on.

Just for fun: According to DYT, I’m a type 4. I’d love to know what your type is if you take the free quiz!

Action Point

Read up on body shapes and energy profiling.

Add sections to your Pinterest board about your body shape and DYT type.

What styles look really good on your body shape?

Which ones should you avoid?

What are your top five or six colors that will really enhance your complexion?

What colors are more apt to wash you out?

Take it a step further and do some research on face shapes and hairstyles.

Find a woman you admire (either someone you know, or a famous person) who has a similar complexion and body shape as you do.

Pay attention to what she wears.

Keep developing your own style, but always learn from the best!

My personal fashion icon is Kate Middleton.

How to start a capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is:

a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.” (source)

I love this concept because it implies these two things:

  • simplifying
  • being intentional about what you buy and wear

Want to Feel More Confident?

Begin to thank God for who He made you to be.

Regardless what you’ve previously believed about yourself, you are a treasured, one-of-a-kind, beautiful woman.

Does it feel hard to own your personal sense of worth and beauty?  Why or why not?

Do you have daughters?  If so, are you helping them cultivate their own sense of style?

Give them space to be themselves, and to eventually grow into their own unique womanhood.

Identity is a God-given gift.
