How to Wear White in Winter: 7 Easy, Minimalist Tips
This post: Easy ideas you might not have thought of for how to wear white in winter.
Wearing white in winter–is it a fashion faux pas or a style statement?
Well, it can be both. Or neither. Or just a really bad idea, depending on where you live, what you do, & how many small people will potentially spill their juice on your couch (or slacks).
I’m a work-from-home mom who lives in North Texas with a houseful of teenagers. In other words, I’ve earned my rite of passage.
Here are my BEST ideas for how to wear white in winter, sans regret.

7 Minimalist Tips for How to Wear White in Winter
First things first: contrary to popular belief, white is not neutral.
White, like black, is a statement-maker. And getting the “right” white is kind of a big deal.
Find out which white you should be wearing in this article from Roberta Style Lee, “How Do I Know If I Should Wear White or Cream?”
I’m very fair (with cool skin tones), so I opt for stark white any time I’m wearing white directly against my skin. For coats & other accessories, I can pull off winter white… but I never wear yellow creams or ivory.
Once you’ve figured out your “perfect” white, keep reading for my 7 how-to-wear-white-in-winter tips.
1) How to wear a white coat in winter…
The answer: over black, bold, or jewel tones, if you’re pale fair like I am.
With earth tones, creams, & warm colors, if you’re lucky enough to have tan skin or warm undertones.
But seriously–wearing a white coat in winter is an easy way to elevate your style. It looks & feels opulent.
Need an elegant coat that won’t break the bank? My favorite white winter coat is from JCrew Factory.

2) Think White Scarves, Mittens, & Beanies
How to wear white in winter for ladies is so easy… just accessorize! Pull that white, cable knit beanie over your head & wrap up in cozy, white mittens & a dreamy chenille scarf.
The pop of white is statement in itself, even with more casual outfits.
Pro tip: Opt for fingerless mittens. It’s just easier that way!
3) White Leather Handbag
As a woman with a minimalist style, nothing makes me quite as happy as finding year-round staples to add to my capsule wardrobe.
For me, a white leather handbag ticks the box as a year-round staple. I’m a Kate Spade girl, & use this white crossbody purse nearly every day.
Another brand I love, Quince, has this white leather shoulder bag & a larger, cream leather tote, too.
4) Pearls & Opal Jewelry
Nothing makes a classy statement quite like a string of pearls, or a pair of pearl drop earrings! Especially in the winter, pearls stand out against wool, cashmere, & the bolder jewel tones of the season.
Opals give a similar look as pearls, but they’re not quite as expensive.
Check out this lovely, 3-piece opal set from Kay Jewelers. My husband, Jeremy, gifted me this for Christmas & it’s one of my favorite staple pieces this winter.
Pro tip: White gold & sterling silver settings are stunning with pearls & opals.
5) White Velvet Hair Bow
I’m loving the coquette style aesthetic that’s trending right now! Velvet bows are such an easy way to elevate your winter outfits, & easily add a feminine touch.
For a chic but minimalist fashion statement, slip a while velvet bow into your pony tail, French twist, or half-up.
6) White Cashmere Sweater
Nothing feels or looks quite as luxurious in winter as a cashmere sweater–especially a white one.
If you haven’t discovered the $50 cashmere sweater from Quince, take a look! This brand has made quality capsule pieces, like the cashmere sweater, affordable for normal people with high fashion tastes. 😉
7) White Nail Polish
Need something quick & inexpensive to polish off your winter style? Give yourself a non-toxic DIY mani pedi.
Go icy white, dazzling, or more “nude” (like I did with my flannel shacket outfit).
Bonus Winter White Accessories:
- Pull on a warm pair of cable knit boot socks with your winter boots for a fun look! This cozy pair is my personal favorite.
- Slip a leather skinny belt on for a polished look with your slacks or sweater dress. This one from Quince is elegant but affordable.
- Love wearing sunnies? A pair of white sunglasses will add an interesting spark to your winter style.
Your turn.
