Why Pressing Pause Sometimes is a Really Good Idea
This is one of those weeks when our family presses pause.
The visitors have gone home.
The holiday food is eaten.
The seasonal clutter is put away for another year.
The events on the calendar are fulfilled and, for a brief moment, there are no more pages to turn.
It feels like the frenzy of Christmas has finally slowed to a peaceful waltz.
And I’m in no hurry to rush through it.
Not before I finish savoring everything that’s left of this season and these moments.
So we hit pause.
It’s the week when the little kids wear jammies all day.
The kind of week where quilts and books and pillows abound, along with endless snacks to nibble on throughout the day.
When sleeping in is on the schedule, and mornings are luxuriously slow.
When fuzzy socks and blankets ward off the outside chill, and cups of hot tea warm our insides like a child’s fervent hug.
It’s the kind of week that makes Christmas actually feel like a holiday, instead of a festive sort of grind.
Without times to press pause, I might very well rush ahead at break neck speed… and forget to be thankful for the quiet moments that keep life centered.
Without times to press pause, I’m very likely to forget to prioritize and reflect on what values I want to chart the next twelve months of my life.
Without times to press pause, I know I won’t last another year-long marathon.
As a family, we need times to rest.
Times to cherish and focus.
Times to celebrate and remember.
We need times to press pause.
To ignore, if just for a moment, the frenzied blur of motion and commotion going on outside the four walls of our home.
And just intentionally be.
Have you pressed paused lately?
