This post: Love Swiss Miss peppermint hot chocolate? Here’s a master mix recipe that’s even BETTER!
My kids have always been CRAZY about this peppermint hot chocolate recipe! And why not? It’s a fun recipe to make + drink – you know, the candy canes and all.
If you love Swiss Miss Peppermint hot chocolate, well, this cocoa mix tastes even better (in my humble opinion).
It’s so tasty for the winter season, + makes a wonderful Christmas gift.
This recipe yields about four cups of hot cocoa mix… plenty for you to enjoy and share.
Here’s the Better Than Swiss Miss Peppermint hot chocolate recipe to print:
Peppermint Hot Chocolate
A festive holiday drink that kids will enjoy making AND drinking!
Ingredients
- 1 C sugar
- 1 C cocoa powder
- 1/2 C powdered milk
- 6 candycanes
Instructions
-
Place the sugar, cocoa powder, and powdered milk into a blender (I use the Blendtec!). Process for about one minute.
Remove the wrapper from your candy canes. Add the candy to the food processor (I break them into a few pieces first).
Process again, this time for about 15 seconds. If your mix still has large pieces of candy canes, process again for about 15 seconds.
Your cocoa mix is ready to use and enjoy!
To make a cup of peppermint hot chocolate, whisk 4 to 5 TBSP of mix into an 8-ounce mug of hot milk. Add a few mini marshmallows on top if you want!
And here’s a step-by-step tutorial, just for fun:
Better Than Swiss Miss Peppermint Hot Chocolate recipe
- sugar (I use this raw sugar, also available at Aldi or Walmart)
- cocoa powder
- powdered milk (this one is nice and rich; or this for a non-dairy option)
- candy canes (try these, if you want organic)
A few other things you’ll need:
- a blender (I use the Blendec)
- a favorite coffee mug!
- milk, and a sauce pan to heat it up
- a large jar or air-tight container to store your cocoa mix
Step #1:
Process the sugar, cocoa powder, and powdered milk in a high-powered blender for about one minute.
Side note: I’ve used the Blendtec nearly every day for about ten years now, and I absolutely love it.
If you’re in the market for a professional-grade blender, the Blendtec is worth every penny.
Step #2:
Add several candy canes (I used six) to the blender pitcher.
Go ahead and remove the candy wrapper first, okay?
And, yes, go ahead… eat a candy cane or two.
I like to break my candy canes into smallish pieces before I throw them in the Blendtec.
Step #3:
Process the hot cocoa mix for about 15 seconds, then give it a little stir.
If your mix still has chunks of candy cane in it, process it again for another 15 seconds.
It should be smooth when it’s ready to serve.

Step #4:
Now it’s time to heat up your milk!
Some of my kids use “regular” (cow’s) milk, and the rest of us drink almond milk.
You’ll need about 8-ounces of milk per serving; gently heat it up in a saucepan on the stove top.
I have to give a nod to the Pioneer Woman right here… aren’t her dishes beautiful?
The pretty “holly” plate under the white coffee mug is by Better Homes & Garden. I love festive dishes!
Step #5:
Once your milk (or almond milk) is nice and warm, add 4 to 5 TBSP of your amazing Better Than Swiss Miss Peppermint Hot Chocolate mix to your mug…
Whisk it really well, until it’s smooth and creamy.
By the way, I like my hot cocoa pretty rich… thus the 4 to 5 TBSP of mix.
Trust me, it’s DELICIOUS!
Add a handful of mini marshmallows (if you feel the need for a true sugar overload!), and most of all…
ENJOY!

Thanks for spreading the chocolate joy! xo
I like the idea of making my own hot chocolate. that way I could make it with a bit darker of chocolate. I’ll have to consider getting some powdered milk and giving that a try.
It’s totally tweakable! 🙂 I love making this. Enjoy!
