When is Advent this year?
This post: When is Advent 2024? And why it actually starts now.
Advent is quick on the heels of Thanksgiving this year. Precisely, Advent begins Sunday, December 1, 2024.
But why am I writing an entire blog post about something you can easily find by Googling, “When is Advent?”
Because I love this sacred season, & I believe it’s worth a few minutes of my time to plunk out a post on a dreary November day.
Even as I sit here in my cozy kitchen, with one eye on my laptop & the other on the chicken pot pie simmering in the oven, I’m keenly aware of how quickly Christmastide is crowding in on our autumnal celebrations.
Blustery winds outside my farmhouse windows are driving away the last, lingering bits of fall here in North Texas. Not unlike the sprigs of red berries & spruce boughs, all tangled up with fading, fragile leaves across my yard.
The colors of competing seasons.
Just around the corner from my kitchen, the living room is softly lit from our Thanksgiving Tree–by far one of the most favored autumn traditions in our house.
But the corner of the room? Strewn with Christmas wrapping paper & ribbon, as an upcoming trip to visit our daughter overseas prompted me to wrap gifts much earlier than usual.
At any given moment, I’ve got cornbread dressing & Christmas wassail recipes in my head, checklists for Thanksgiving dinner, & the next child’s annual Christmas shopping date.
Traditions of competing seasons.
So when is Advent?
Officially, December 1 – 24.
But in spirit, Advent starts now. In these mixed-up moments of hurry & hustle, merry & messy.
Because anticipating the miracle of Jesus will never be bound to a block on the calendar, or an AI-generated answer to a hastily typed Google search.
We are waiting, because we are always at least a little desperate for the peace & order, rest & hope that He brings.
We are waiting, now.
And once the season officially begins with the dawn of that first December Sunday, we will lean in even more eagerly. And we will celebrate, in our own messy & mixed up, hurry & worrisome ways, the countdown.
Embrace peace, my Friend.
At Advent season & always.
xo, Kristy
