This post: Is xylitol good for teeth? What you need to know.
Have you ever heard of xylitol sugar?
It’s the sugary white stuff (only it’s not sugar) that has become increasingly popular as a natural sweetener in recent years.
I was pretty skeptical of it at first.
I mean, how many “natural sweeteners” are actually natural… or actually good for you?!
Today I’m going to tell you about 3+ xylitol benefits you probably didn’t know about.
Specifically, I’ll be talking about organic xylitol- the kind that is sustainably derived from North American hardwood trees, not corn. In other words, birch xylitol.
The brand I love + have used for years for organic xylitol products is ZELLIE’S.
How I Discovered the Ways Xylitol Benefits Your Teeth
If you’ve followed this blog for very long, then you probably know that I’m a natural mama and I love learning everything I can about healthy ways to raise our five kids.
Several years ago, we started experiencing some issues with our kids’ oral health… yeah, cavities.
I wasn’t a very happy mama!
Since we do brush our teeth religiously, I started seeking out resources that address oral health from the core out.
It was obvious that we needed something more than just the “brush and floss daily” routine.
I talked to two different natural practitioners- our chiropractor and our homeopath- and they both referred me to xylitol.
At the time, I knew it was a natural alternative to sugar, but I had yet to discover the connection between xylitol and dental health.
I talked with our homeopath rather extensively, and she told me about Dr. Ellie Phillips (whom she had personally heard lecture at a practitioner’s conference) and Dr. Ellie’s website-Zellies.com.
I ordered Dr. Ellie’s book, Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye (formally, Mouth Care Comes Clean) and read it.
This resource has been a life-changing approach to oral health for our family.
I’ve shared about Zellies several times here on the blog (including this interview with Dr. Ellie, the founder of Zellies.com.)
For over two years now, our family has used xylitol products and religiously stuck to Dr. Ellie’s mouth care system.
Here are a few results we are experiencing:
#1 Whitening of Teeth
This isn’t the kind of “bleached” white most Americans are after, but we’ve definitely noticed a gradual whitening after using this mouth care system for the past two years.
I wore braces for three years when I was a teenager, and ended up with several stains on my teeth. I’ve noticed that most of the staining is completely gone.
I’ve never had my teeth whitened at the dentist, so all of these improvements are results of Zellie’s products and Dr. Ellie’s mouth care system.
#2 Clean, Clean Teeth
Our teeth feel incredibly clean and polished. That kind of fresh-out-of-the-dentist’s-chair kind of clean.
My husband religiously follows Dr. Ellie’s mouth care system because of this!
#3 Healed Cavities
I wouldn’t have believed this if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes:
Right around the time we discovered Zellie’s, one of our sons had six small cavities in the back of his mouth, between his teeth.
The cost of filling those teeth- and the possible toxicity of doing so– made me hesitate.
Since we had just begun using Zellie’s and Dr. Ellie’s mouth care system, I wanted to give it some time to work. We had a few of the cavities filled, but I canceled the second appointment.
Six months later, Colton’s next set of x-rays showed that all his teeth were strong, healthy, and completely cavity-free. The three, small cavities in his back teeth had healed.
You can read more about Zellie’s products, and how to use Dr. Ellie’s mouth care system, at Zellies.com.
I will tell you that Zellie’s is not a quick-fix for teeth with cavities, or for oral health in general.
It is a lifestyle of learning how to daily keep the pH balanced in your mouth in order for your teeth to heal and thrive in a healthy environment.
If you’re interested in learning more about oral health, Zellie’s, and Dr. Ellie’s mouth care system, I highly recommend Dr. Ellie’s book.
Mouth Care Comes Clean is available on Amazon for $16.25 (paperback), or get it for the Kindle for just $.99!
A Few Ways Xylitol Benefits Your Body
Xylitol is glycemic-friendly. This is why baking with xylitol is a good choice if you’re limiting your sugar intake for health issues.
Is xylitol is Keto-friendly? Yes! This low-carb sweetener is great for weight loss. Think Keto, Paleo, Trim Healthy Mama.
Xylitol doesn’t feed yeast. If you’re trying to get rid of candida, you need to know this. The xylitol-candida relationship is a beneficial one!
Where To Buy Xylitol
Xylitol bulk. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I love Zellie’s xylitol. You can buy it in one-pound bulk for $10. I’ve also ordered xylitol in bulk from Amazon.
A few times a year, Zellie’s runs a 20% off promo. This is when I stock up!
(I always update this post with the current Zellie’s promo code, so be sure and bookmark or save this post.)
Best xylitol sweetener. If you’re wanted to use a xylitol blend for baking, check out Trim Healthy Mama’s Gentle Sweet. For sweetening beverages, look for organic, non-GMO xylitol-blend sweeteners at your local Walmart or on Amazon.

Oh my goodness!!!!!!! I am a gum chewer and hate that MOST gum has aspartame in it. So…..any or all of the gum interests me and so do the nano-silver toothbrushes!!!! I’ve looked at other ones and these seem very inexpensive in comparison.
My mom has been getting Zellies for a while now (I think she got started on them through you, or another favorite blogger, Kristy!), and now she has me hooked on giving them to my babies as a candy treat!
That’s awesome, Alexa!
We love Zellies so much! I’m really excited that my kids all love them too… they’re super tasty, and so good for your teeth.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share that with me, Alexa!
What does everyone do for toothpaste?
Our family uses Crest toothpaste, which is recommended by Dr. Ellie Phillips (founder of Zellies.com).
I’d be interested in the book-we’ve been having dental issues too, and I’ve been wondering what to do without spending lots of money on dental care!
Katie, this book is SO helpful! I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I would LOVE this!
